Men were required to train in the military unless they had a valid reason not to. In Sparta however they were very strict about it.

They also enjoyed going to the theatre to watch tragedies or comedies, some of which they could relate to.
-
Women stuck to more domestic work: spinning, weaving, cleaning and the like. However if the family was of great wealth, a slave would do such work and the woman of the family will laze around all day.

They were mainly confined to their houses and werent involved at all in public life or politics.
-
It was also considered improper for a woman or girl to go to the theatre.

However one public duty for a woman was acting as a priestess in a temple.
